[Book] Angus Maddison -- Chinese Economic Performance in the Long Run: 960-2030 AD

Angus Maddison

1. Angus Maddison (1926 - 2010) was probably the world authority on quantitative macroeconomic history.

His two volumes on the world's economy can aptly be described as monumental:

The World Economy, Volume 1: A Millennial Perspective (2001)

The World Economy, Volume 2: Historical Statistics (2003)

Most histories are written as interpretative narrative.

Yet many historical claims should be backup with statistical data.

With the advancement in scholarship, some historical claims can be presented with the appropriate statistical data as evidence.

Angus Maddison has devoted the major parts of his life in collecting basic historical data on the world economy and summarized them as statistics in tables, graphs, and lists.

And we owe Angus Maddison a debt for his labor.

2. Besides the two volumes on the world economy, Angus Maddison has also authored a volume specifically on the Chinese economy:

Chinese Economic Performance in the Long Run: 960-2030 AD, Second Edition, Revised and Updated (2007)
